These are the top employers in Washtenaw, Livingston counties

ANN ARBOR, MI — Toyota and the University of Michigan are among the Ann Arbor-area’s largest and most renowned employers.

But the region’s growing number of jobs puts several other industries as high-ranking employers in Washtenaw and Livingston counties. Each year, Ann Arbor SPARK ranks the region’s top employers based on employee workforce size, with high numbers in the educational and health care fields, said Phil Santer, vice president and chief of staff. But over time, those trends change.

“I was looking at the list from 2013 and some of the largest employers in the region at that time included book publishers that we don’t have anymore. That used to be a main industry for the region,” Santer said. “That may have technically counted as manufacturing.”

Others on the list of 31 include the Zingerman’s Family of Businesses, which grew to 700, along with Domino’s, which opened a new innovation space in 2019. Educational and health care providers have been a constant, Santer added.

“I certainly expect there will be additional growth,” Santer said. “Now, there’s a much larger share of professional services. That is included for people working in jobs at the university but also tech startups. There’s been a bigger portion of that.”

Data is compiled through direct connections with companies, lists from Crain’s Detroit Business and other publicly available lists.
